The Churchill Heritage Conway Stewart Collection
This is the third pen in the second series of Conway Stewart Churchill Heritage pens produced in association with Churchill Heritage, through which the Churchill family distributes money to charities and good causes that keep alive the legacy of Sir Winston and the spirit of the words of wisdom he penned.
“Meeting jaw to jaw is better than war”
Engraved on the barrel is Churchill's quote made on the 26th June 1954 at a Congressional Luncheon in Washington ; “Meeting jaw to jaw is better than war”, and underneath this is Winston S Churchill’s signature, and under that is the words “Made in Great Britain”.
There is some controversy with this quote as it was misquoted by Harold Macmillan as "Jaw, jaw is better than war, war" 4 years after Churchill said it. As such, Macmillan's misquote is often attributed to Churchill. However the wise words from Winston Churchill all those years ago still ring true today whichever version of this quote you prefer.
This edition is available in Spitfire Blue & Gold bracketed with black nib-holder /tassie and barrel end to give that classical look. It is also available in Classic Black & Gold. All fountain pens have 18ct gold nibs fitted. The wide 9ct gold cap band is stamped with the British Hallmarks to show it is genuine gold. There is also included a leaflet that explains the history of British Hallmarks.
A book “Winston Churchill; Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat: The Great Speeches”
A book called “Winston Churchill; Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat: The Great Speeches” is supplied with each pen. This magnificent anthology includes 33 of Churchill's most famous speeches from his maiden speech in the House of Commons in 1901 to his swan song of 1955, via his towering rhetoric of the Second World War. As the Sunday Telegraph summed up when reviewing this book , "Churchill was a word spinner of genius....a splendid anthology".
The “Pug” pen
Engraved on the top of the cap of all the Heritage pens is the iconic sketch of “Pug” that Winston penned on a letter to his wife Clementine dated 1st August 1909. There is also a facsimile of the letter hand written by Winston that accompanies every pen. Clementine called Winston “my sweet pug” and in turn he often drew little animated pictures of “pug” at the bottom of his letters to her. This one with the letter “W” above its head looks very similar to a bulldog that people often associate with the great man.
Winston Churchill’s Red Cabinet Box
Each pen comes in a replica of one of Winston Churchill’s Red Cabinet Box – these are the brief cases used by ministers of the British Government to carry official papers. On the lid is another of one of his famous quotes “I have always earned my living by my pen”. Inside the box is a foam insert holding a copy of the book “Winston Churchill; Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat: The Great Speeches” containing many of his famous speeches, and a bottle of green ink. Also included is a facsimile of Churchill’s 1909 letter to his wife showing his actual handwriting and his sketch of the “Pug”.
Limited Edition of 100 pens world-wide
Only 100 pens will be made of each of the quotes in the series, and each pen comes with a certificate detailing the edition number. The edition number is also engraved on the end of the barrel.
